Workshop Participants for Japan 2019

We have five confirmed participants and have closed our applications. We are hopeful that our colleagues from Iran and Morocco might still join us -- though unlikely due to their governments’ exit/entrance visas.  (However, I’m grateful at this tricky time in Iran’s history that Morita resonates with health professionals of an Islamic culture).

Here are our quirky introductions (took liberty to make minor edits); they forecast a most interesting (resourceful) workshop all together (‘isshoni’ – that which comes from the power in/of a certain togetherness – a term you will hear throughout our travels).

Participants

Cesario Garcia, (Washington state), USA

I received a certificate in Morita Therapy from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, U.S.A. (under the direction of Dr Brian Ogawa).  Part of our program consisted of a weeklong experiential group training in the Seattle region of Washington (which included snow shoeing), and an all-day presentation on Classic Morita Therapy, alongside our course work. Today, I am a child mental health therapist at Cowlitz Tribal Health of Seattle and I utilize humanistic and holistic approaches, encouraging traditional Native American ceremonies and traditions when appropriate.  When I am not working, I enjoy traveling, and exploring the great state of Washington with my significant other, Megan. We enjoy spending our three children -- cats: Binks, Little, and Sammy.

David O’Donaghue, Psychologist/Professor, (Iowa), USA

I’m a retired clinical psychologist and professor. I have been organizing and administering adult education programs for the past 18 years in the United States in the mountains of North Carolina, Baltimore and New Orleans. I am currently building a retreat center in rural Iowa on 47 acres of hills, which will serve as a residential location for various classes, workshops, individual retreats and will be an excellent facility for Morita therapy. The quirkiest thing about me is that I have been visited by extraterrestrial, extra-dimensional “beings” for 12 years. “They” came to me as vibrational patterns, which (at the time) my cognitive structures were not prepared to understand. And yet, I somehow know they came due to a willingness to be totally open to them. This phenomenal experience allowed me to gradually develop an empty waiting stance and non-thinking mode of being, which has greatly enhanced my meditation practice. I also do shamanic work, especially with the dead.

Esther Fleming, Social Worker/Counsellor, (Tasmania) Australia

I came across Morita therapy in 2010 and became deeply interested as it fits my own framework of practice, which incorporates an ecological approach. As a school social worker in Tasmania, I have recently incorporated adventure-based therapy with children who experience anxiety and work to have it added to the school curriculum. I have an interest in community recovery and support people who are experiencing environmental depredation and disaster aftermath. My talents and interests include gardening, building, painting, growing orchids, mixing music (beats). I take a strong activists role in protecting the Tarkine on Tasmania’s West coast. I have great bush skills, and love nothing more than to cook on an open fire. My quirks are that I am a little wild, and I crave dirt. I love the smell of artists’ oil paints and the sound of my laugh.

Linda Van Draanen, Counseling Psychologist, (Melbourne), Australia

I recite poetry to myself almost unconsciously (dare I say). They are mostly childhood poems by the romantics. It’s like a music worm. I enjoy walking on soft ground particularly in the high country. I love gazing at layers of mountains in the distance across the Blue Mountains or Alpine regions.
I keep water and food alongside me -- not just for long walks. I prefer my coffee from fine white cups.

Sam Oliver, Filmmaker, (London), United Kingdom

I am a young British filmmaker, who has a fascination with mental health and rehabilitation. In the last 18 months, I have travelled the world interviewing addiction experts on the topic of Iboga/Ibogaine; which is a hallucinogenic root from the jungles of West Africa, which seems to have the ability to interrupt peoples chemical addictions without them experiencing withdrawals, as well as allowing them to have a new perspective on what lead them to their addictions. Having grown up in a world of kids who were highly medicated on mood stabilizers, I have been interested in what leads people to this as a 'solution', and always fascinated by the fact that denial and suppression seemed to be the modus operandi. I have been particularly interested in Morita therapy, having looked at lots of different therapeutic methods and finding that Morita's approach resonated deeply with me. I look forward to learning more.

CMC Staff

Peg LeVine, Director of CMC,  (Melbourne/Daylesford), Australia

From the time I began formal study of the classic (authentic) form of Morita therapy in the late 1980s (as recounted in the personal preference of my recent book), I wanted to formalise an international training program. And while I have been invited around the globe to give weekend workshops, or to assist the development of a ‘counselling’ stream – my commitment to preserve the four stages in a natural environment (non-clinical) setting as Morita intended is unwavering. I observe again and again how my clients flourish when freed from thinking about how to think. I am simultaneously reflective and excited about our travels/exploration together during this inaugural international workshop in Japan.

A few of my quirks: I rub leaves together often and inhale their scents – eucalyptus and lavender blends invigorate me. When carving stone, the stone body tells me which parts to leave raw. I prefer a long bath to a shower. I keep a journal of metaphors – got some new ones this summer from the garden – ‘ …Iike asparagus that bursts forth overnight’.  I re-centre by walking slowly on my property after a hard day and shoot arrows from a recurve bow into a straw bale till the sun goes down. I never wear socks in my running shoes; I listen to Pick Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ these days on a run. I like anchovies on my pizza.

Robert White, Clinical Psychologist,  (Melbourne), Australia

I have worked over the last 30 years as a clinical psychologist in private practice with the gay community in Melbourne, in Prahran and St Kilda. I have had a fifteen-year interest/engagement in Morita therapy due to my long association Dr LeVine. I have assisted the fours stages of residential care at her centre in Daylesford and introduced bonsai practice into the second stage. I maintain my interest in the application of Morita principles with my clients in my outpatient practice, along with an ecological emphasis, which is supported by a small veggie and herb garden outside my city office, and bonsai collection at my home office.

My quirks are about plants, I love to grow things, including the art (and challenge) of maintaining my Bonsai. I play the Piano Accordion (only a little lately), and I am staff to my Bengal Cat who seems to own my home.

Naoki Watanabe, Psychiatrist and Musician, Japan

I am a psychiatrist working at the Mental Health Hospital in Kamkurayama, Japan.
I assist various patients from children to adolescents to the elderly. I use music therapy in my private practice.  Sometimes I introduce a client to Morita therapy, but I am unsure if the hospital setting limits the power of the stages of the treatment for their recovery; I ponder this with my colleagues.  I find that Morita therapy can teach us to live with our imperfections. My quirky stories: I am always learning more about making music with the Piano. I go to Hiroshima every 2 months to assist ASD children and volunteer community counselling.

Katsuo Watanabe, Psychiatrist and Art Counsellor, Japan

I am a Psychiatrist and own/direct the Kamakura Mental Health Clinic, and I have developed the Ueno Mental Health Clinic, which includes an art therapy centre. I am interested in Natural Therapies, and ways to combine Clinical Art group therapy sessions with aspects of Morita Therapy. I have a pet parrot who is a special part of my practice, too. I am arranging for the CMC group to experience the so-called “seashell polishing therapy” in Ueno clinic from the standpoint of Morita Therapy.
My quirky story: I travel every week across three work centres, namely Kamakura, Ueno and Chiba. For me, such travel between different places offers me refreshing new experiences in my lifetime. I made a solo trip to Daylesford, Victoria in Australia to see Peg’s land where she has practiced the four stages of Morita therapy, where I encountered parrots living in their natural environment all together.
